Core Structure & Formula
A/An: Singular countable noun mentioned for the first time or non-specific (a laptop, an engineer)
The: Specific item known to both speaker & listener, unique things (the atmosphere), or superlatives
Zero Article: Plural and uncountable nouns in general (Bees are essential pollinators / I enjoy jazz / Wheat grows)
Institutions: at school / in hospital / in prison (as student/patient) vs at the school (the physical building)

AFirst Mention vs Second Mention

Use a/an when introducing a new person or thing; use the once it has become specific.

A researcher and an intern were reviewing the samples. The researcher was from Canada, but the intern was local.
We stayed at a guesthouse near the campus. The guesthouse was surprisingly affordable.

BGeneral Statements (No Article)

When talking about things, people, or concepts in general, do NOT use 'the'.

I'm fascinated by bees. (bees in general, not the bees)
Architects are usually paid more than draughtsmen.
Most students prefer online lectures. (not The most students)

CSchool / The School, Hospital / The Hospital

Without 'the' means participating in the primary institution purpose. With 'the' refers to the physical building.

Mei goes to school every day. (as a student)
Mei's father went to the school to meet the teacher. (as a visitor)
Omar was injured and taken to hospital. (as a patient)
