Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about IELTS test preparation, scoring, and platform features.

What is IELTS Practice Zone?

IELTS Practice Zone is a comprehensive online learning platform offering free, authentic practice tests for IELTS Listening, Reading, and Writing modules, alongside AI-assisted essay evaluation, vocabulary tools, and detailed strategy guides.

Is IELTS Practice Zone free to use?

Yes! Core practice tests, strategy guides, vocabulary builders, and immediate scoring features are available to all students.

How does the AI Writing evaluation work?

Our AI writing tool analyzes your Task 1 and Task 2 essays according to official IELTS marking criteria: Task Achievement/Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy, returning detailed feedback and estimated band scores.

Are the Listening and Reading answers officially graded?

Listening and Reading tests automatically check your submitted responses against verified answer keys stored in our secure database. Objective score summaries display your correct answers and equivalent band scores (0–9).

What is the difference between Academic and General Training IELTS?

Academic IELTS is primarily for university admissions and professional registrations in English-speaking countries. General Training IELTS focuses on basic survival skills in social and workplace contexts, commonly required for secondary education, work experience, or immigration.

How long are the practice tests?

Official IELTS Listening lasts ~30 minutes (plus 10 mins transfer time), Reading lasts 60 minutes (3 passages, 40 questions), and Writing lasts 60 minutes (Task 1: 20 mins, Task 2: 40 mins). Our practice interface supports timed practice to replicate official test conditions.

Is my progress saved automatically?

When you sign in with a free account, your test completions, target band goals, scores, and custom vocabulary words are automatically saved to your cloud profile.

How is my overall IELTS band score calculated?

Your overall band is the mean of your four section scores (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking), rounded to the nearest whole or half band. A mean ending in .75 rounds up, while a mean ending in .25 rounds down, which surprises a lot of candidates. See our full breakdown in the IELTS Blog for a worked example.

How long is an IELTS score valid for?

Most universities, employers, and immigration authorities treat an IELTS Test Report Form as valid for two years from the test date. Always confirm the exact validity period with the specific institution or authority you're applying to, since requirements can vary.

Can I retake individual sections of IELTS instead of the whole test?

Standard IELTS requires retaking all four sections together. However, the IELTS One Skill Retake option, now accepted by a growing number of institutions, allows candidates to resit a single section if they're unhappy with just one score. Check with your test centre and receiving institution to see whether this option is accepted.

Is my data private and secure?

Yes. Your practice test answers, scores, and vocabulary notes are stored securely and are never shared publicly. See our Privacy & Cookies page for full details on what data is collected and how it's used, including for advertising.

Do I need to create an account to practice?

No. Listening, Reading, and Writing tests, Grammar lessons, and Strategy Guides are all accessible without signing in. Creating a free account only unlocks the Progress Tracker, so your scores and history are saved across visits and devices.

Does IELTS Practice Zone work on mobile devices?

Yes, the entire platform, including audio playback for Listening tests and the Writing task editor, is fully responsive and works in any modern mobile browser. No app download is required.
