Core Structure & Formula

Simultaneous Action: Clause + verb-ing (Researchers spent the morning collecting samples)

Sequence: Having + Past Participle, Main Clause (Having submitted her thesis, she took a long holiday)

Reason / Cause: verb-ing clause, Main Clause (Lacking sufficient data, the team delayed the report = Because the team lacked data)

Passive Participle: Past Participle clause (The samples collected during the survey were sent to the lab)

ATwo Actions at the Same Time

Use an -ing clause when two actions happen simultaneously by the same subject.

•The technician left the lab muttering about the broken equipment. (= she was muttering as she left)

•Leo strained his shoulder carrying heavy equipment. (= while he was carrying it)

•Be careful crossing the construction site.

BHaving (done) for Previous Actions

When one action is completed before another starts, begin with 'Having + past participle'.

•Having found suitable accommodation, we started searching for part-time work.

•Having submitted her thesis, she took a long holiday.

•Having reviewed the data twice, the analyst was confident in the conclusion.

CExplaining Reasons (-ing for "Because")

Participle clauses at the start of a sentence explain why something happened.

•Lacking sufficient funding, the researchers postponed the trial. (= Because they lacked funding)

•Being new to the city, he found it hard to navigate the transport system. (= Because he was new to the city)

•Not having a car, she finds it difficult to reach the industrial park.
