Gerund vs Infinitive (Verb + -ing or to ...)

Mastering verbs followed exclusively by -ing, verbs followed by to-infinitive, and critical verbs that change meaning (remember, regret, stop, try).

Core Structure & Formula

Verb + -ing: enjoy, admit, avoid, consider, deny, finish, imagine, keep, mind, postpone, risk, suggest

Verb + to-inf: afford, agree, arrange, decide, deserve, fail, forget, hope, learn, manage, offer, plan, promise, refuse, tend

Verb + Object + to-inf: advise, allow, encourage, force, invite, persuade, remind, tell, warn

Make & Let: make/let + somebody + bare infinitive without to (He made me repeat the presentation / Let me explain)

AVerbs that change meaning

Key verbs whose meaning alters completely based on whether they take -ing or to-infinitive.

•Remember to do = remember before doing (Please remember to submit the form).

•Remember doing = recall a past memory (I clearly remember submitting the form).

•Regret doing = sorry for something done in past (I regret cancelling the trip).

•Regret to say = formal apology for current news (We regret to inform applicants).

•Try to do = make an effort (I tried to finish the exam on time).

•Try doing = test an experiment (Try restarting the software).

BMake and Let (Bare Infinitive)

'Make' and 'let' are followed by the base verb without 'to' in active voice. In passive voice, 'be made to do' takes 'to'.

•Long commutes make me feel drained. (not makes me to feel)

•Her manager wouldn't let her leave the meeting early.

•Passive: We were made to wait for two hours at the visa office.

✗ He suggested me to apply for the scholarship.

'Suggest' is NEVER followed by 'object + to-infinitive'.

Active 'make' takes a bare infinitive without 'to'.
