Present Continuous vs Present Simple 2 (State Verbs & "Being")

Mastering non-continuous state verbs (like, know, belong, realize) and dynamic meanings of think, see, and "is being".

Core Structure & Formula
State verbs: like, want, need, prefer, know, realise, understand, recognise, believe, suppose, remember, mean, belong, fit, contain, consist, seem
Behavior right now: am/is/are + being + adjective (He is being unreasonable = behaving that way now)

AVerbs not normally used in Continuous

Verbs expressing thoughts, mental states, senses, and possession are stative and cannot take -ing.

I'm thirsty. I need some water. (not I'm needing)
Do you understand what the lecturer means? (not Are you understanding)
This alloy consists mainly of aluminium and copper.

BDual-Meaning Verbs: Think, Feel, See

When "think" means believe/opinion, use simple. When it means mental consideration/planning, continuous is permitted.

What do you think of the new curriculum? (= opinion)
I'm thinking of switching to a different degree programme. (= considering)
Do you see that building on the corner? (sensory perception: simple)

Cam/is/are being (Temporary Behavior)

'He is being unreasonable' means he is behaving that way at this moment, which is unusual for him.

I can't understand why the examiner is being so strict today. He isn't usually like that.
She never listens to feedback. She is very stubborn. (permanent character trait)
