Most candidates assume their overall IELTS band score is calculated by adding up their four section scores and dividing by four. That's roughly true, but the rounding rule that gets applied afterward catches a surprising number of people off guard, and it can be the difference between a Band 6.5 and a Band 7.

Step 1: Each Section Gets Its Own Band

Listening and Reading are marked out of 40 raw points, then converted to a band score from 0 to 9 using an official conversion table. Because the Reading passages differ in difficulty between Academic and General Training, the conversion table is different for each, which is why the same number of correct answers can produce a different band depending on which version you sat.

Writing and Speaking are marked directly on a 9-band scale by trained examiners, based on four assessment criteria each (for Writing: Task Achievement/Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy; for Speaking: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation). Your score for each skill is the average of the four criteria, already rounded to the nearest whole or half band before it's combined with the other three sections.

Step 2: The Four Section Scores Are Averaged

Once you have a band for Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, IELTS calculates the mean of the four. For example: Listening 7.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.0, Speaking 7.0 gives a mean of 6.75.

Step 3: The Rounding Rule That Surprises Everyone

The mean is then rounded to the nearest whole or half band. Here's the part that catches people out: a result ending in .25 is rounded down to the nearest half band, while a result ending in .75 is rounded up to the nearest whole band. So in our example, 6.75 rounds up to an overall Band 7, not down to 6.5.

This means the exact same four section scores can round to different overall bands depending on the order candidates might expect. It's worth calculating this yourself after every practice test so you understand exactly how close you are to your target, rather than relying on gut-feeling averages.

This is why examiners and tutors often advise focusing improvement effort on your two weakest sections rather than spreading it thin across all four.

Why Writing Often Holds Candidates Back

Because Listening and Reading are machine-markable and Writing is examiner-marked against strict criteria, Writing tends to be the section where candidates plateau. A common pattern is strong Listening and Reading scores (Band 7.5+) held down by a Writing score stuck at 6.0 to 6.5, because grammatical range and lexical resource take longer to develop than reading speed or listening accuracy.
